Since the implementation of the reform and opening up policy in 1978, China's economy and society have undergone tremendous changes and progress, which has not only brought important influence to the surrounding region, but also has global significance. Although Hong Kong only returned to the motherland in the middle of these 40 years, it participated in the reform and opening up of Chinese mainland almost the entire process, benefiting from it and playing a role of inspiration, demonstration and support.
This book is undoubtedly the most comprehensive study of the relationship between reform and opening-up and Hong Kong to date. Mr. Chen Duo, editor-in-chief of the book and former director of the Institute of Hong Kong and Macao Studies of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, invited nearly 20 experts and scholars from Hong Kong and the mainland to write a total of 20 chapters on the significance of reform and opening up to Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, regional cooperation and industrial cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland, and exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland in cultural education, social work, land policy, etc., according to their respective strengths, to explain the interaction between Hong Kong and the mainland after the implementation of the reform and opening up policy from different perspectives. The appendix also includes timelines and trade, investment and financial statistics between Hong Kong and the Mainland.
The most unconventional aspect of this book is that it allows readers to see that the interaction and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland over the past 40 years of reform and opening up has gone far beyond the economic and trade fields, but has penetrated into the daily social fabric of both sides. Only by understanding this can we truly understand the interdependence between Hong Kong and the mainland, and identify the trends in the development of the two places in the region.
