The book "Open the Bird Cage" aims to introduce Hong Kong's unique bird culture in a simple way, and to bring out the concept of life aesthetics in Guangdong by deconstructing the bird cage technology.
Since 2019, the author has been learning the craft of the cage from Master Chan Lok-choi, the last surviving bird cage craftsman and inheritor of Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage. While learning the art of the birdcage, he and the research team recorded different details of the craft, including the cultural and historical background of the birdcage, the craftsmanship and accessories of the bamboo cage, the current ecology of the industry, and how the bird's culture affects the landscape of the urban space. The team used a large number of design drawings, illustrations and photographs to sketch and compare different types of Chinese birdcages, leading readers to understand the birdcage craft and bird walking culture in Hong Kong.
Traditional intangible cultural heritage needs to be reinvigorated in order to give the industry new hope. This book takes the bird cage craft as the starting point to detail the historical landscape of bird walking in the city, so that readers can understand and change the culture of bird farming. Through the sharing of the previous generation of bird keepers, we hope that the next generation of caring people will take over the baton, so that the world's unique cultural landscape can continue to develop across the giant wheel of the times.
