Hong Kong's Chinese cheongsam and skirt gown making techniques were inscribed on the first batch of Hong Kong's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. In 2021, Hong Kong's Chinese cheongsam making skills were inscribed on the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative items.
This book takes these two types of clothing as the research object, and traces the history, aesthetics, and form of Chinese men's and women's kaftan and skirt gown in Hong Kong through newspaper clippings, official documents, old photographs, and interviews with several masters. It also focuses on the craftsmanship of the company, including the use of materials, tools, its evolution from the past and the present, and the process of presentation with hand-drawn illustrations, as well as the inheritance system and the historical and cultural values behind it.
