The interview with Nanhua Neon Electric Appliance Factory Co., Ltd. is the beginning of Guo Siheng's in-depth understanding of the development history of Hong Kong's neon signboards. South China donated more than 700 manuscripts to the School of Design of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for visual culture research and teaching. Kwok and his team collated more than 200 neon signboard manuscripts of restaurants to explore Hong Kong's food culture from the 50s to 70s, as well as the social, livelihood and economic conditions of different eras.
In 2018, Kwok published the documentary results of neon signs in the book "Neon Dark: A Record of Hong Kong's Street Visual Culture". In 2024, "Neon Colours: A Visual Record of Manuscript Manuscripts of Food and Beverage Signs" is a continuation of its predecessor, rewriting some of the content and adding more information: Chapter 1 adds a lot of information about the history of neon signs in Hong Kong; Chapter 2 focuses on the changes in Hong Kong's catering industry, such as the development from tea houses to restaurants, western restaurants and ice houses, and the tea and beverage restaurants that have become a city today. The third chapter analyzes the visual aesthetics of neon sign manuscripts, including the shape, font, color and pattern of the signboard. Chapter 4 focuses on the neon sign manuscript for readers to enjoy up close.
Although the number of neon signs on the street has been greatly reduced, the manuscript of the neon sign in the book can not only deepen the reader's understanding of the craftsmanship and aesthetics, but also leave a bright color on the history of neon in Hong Kong.
