There are a large number of temples in Hong Kong, and the construction of temples by various local communities to worship the gods is the foundation of folk religious activities and a precious cultural tradition in Hong Kong. Professor Liu Dickson, Director of the Chinese Temples Committee and the South China Research Centre of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and his research team have focused on the study of 108 groups of temples in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Temple is divided into two volumes. The first volume focuses on 108 groups of temples in Hong Kong, and introduces the history, architectural structure, worship of gods and related customs and festivals of the temples with pictures and texts. Temples in Hong Kong are located in different communities, each with its own history and development process, and has a close relationship with the local community, from which readers can appreciate the history, architecture and related customs and festivals of the temples, and experience the different forms of temples in Hong Kong.
The second volume is an analytical monograph that expounds the basic concepts of temples and folk religious activities in Hong Kong, analyses festivals, ceremonial activities, temple operations and their relationship with local communities, and explores different types of temple structures and their artistic elements. Readers can start with the basic concepts and then look at the relationship between temples in Hong Kong and local society and folk religious activities. The book also includes a brief introduction to the temple deities, temple architecture, decoration and motifs to facilitate readers to grasp the basic elements of each temple.
