On the evening of the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the residents of Pokfulam Village will hold a unique event – the Mid-Autumn Festival Fire Dragon Dance. Dozens of residents led the dragon through the streets and alleys of the village, praying for the safety of the villagers and trying to pass on the culture from generation to generation. The fire dragon dance in Pokfulam, a long-standing tradition, has been inscribed on the list of intangible cultural heritage. Historians Professor Chung Po-yin and Dr Kwok Kam-chau led a research team that spent three years observing, researching and combing historical materials to write the book "Mid-Autumn Festival: Fire Dragon Dance in Pokfulam". The book is divided into six chapters, starting with the sacrificial culture, the historical evolution and regional distribution of the fire dragon dance, and then focusing on the fire dragon dance in Hong Kong, and then focusing on the fire dragon dance in Pokfulam. Reading between the lines, we will discuss the inheritance and transformation of intangible cultural heritage, and think about how this cultural heritage should continue to be preserved.
