Theatre is a temporary place made of bamboo and wood for local organisations to stage sacred performances such as the Birthday of the Gods, the Yulan Festival or the Jiao Festival in Taiping. The whole construction process is based on the experience of the master, and the most appropriate judgment is made according to different terrain and needs, using raw materials including bamboo, fir wood, slivers, etc., without a nail or a screw, only by binding to build a stable theater, which fully embodies the traditional Chinese architectural wisdom.
This time-honored traditional skill was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong in 2017. This book focuses on the historical evolution of the theatre and its production techniques, supplemented by hand-drawn illustrations to present the process in an illustrated manner, describing its inheritance system and the cultural significance behind it.
